FINAL PAPER DUE on BLACKBOARD

In our discussion of identity management, we examined the concept of impression management. This is the idea that we use a variety of communication strategies to influence others’ impressions of us, particularly as we establish new relationships. We also discussed social media which collectively describes all of the channels that make remote personal communication possible. For this assignment, you will write a paper in which you use assigned articles and either an example from pop culture or your personal experience, to examine how identities are managed online. This online identity management can happen in politics, by those connected with the legal system such as lawyers advocating for their clients, in the workplace, at school, and socially, among other situations. It can happen in the establishing of new relationships, as well as in the maintenance of existing ones. While we are all familiar with the horrific stories of online predators, cyber bullies, and identity thieves, we will be focusing on the more everyday experiences of online identity management such as happens on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
